This past weekend my mom took the kids for an impromptu overnight. As a result, we ended up needing to run and buy some formula for the time we would be apart. If we had planned this better it would not have been necessary, but freedom has its price and I was willing to pay!
For the millions of moms out there who buy formula on a regular basis, it is no shock to you that formula is EXPENSIVE! Upon buying the formula (brand name at full price) I did a little math on the ride back to my mom and dad's... if we were using formula right now we'd be spending $340 a month to feed our kids! (Okay, so it would be a little less since I'm sure I'd be using coupons or a generic brand, but nonetheless it would not be cheap!) For all the moments I've wanted to throw in the towel, this was a great reminder to be thankful that I've been able to nurse them both without any major issues and to press on when it's not so fun!

Amen sister! We finally "threw the towel in" at about 9.5 months...granted David is eating solids so he's not drinking nearly as much as he would if he were on a full liquid diet...but I still hate buying it!!
I had a lot of misinformation when Derek was born and he didn't really take to nursing properly (which was partly due to getting a bottle in the hospital without my knowledge. Once he realized food could come easier than nursing he was done!) so we quit after 7 weeks. So yes, we bought formula for a full year!!! I didn't use generic either so although I had help from manufacturer coupons we paid full price for brand name formula. Yikes!!! Now I know a lot more about how to make nursing successful so I hope to avoid formula altogether next time around!!
Maddy's formula is $150 per can! Fortunately there is great programs such as WIC to help!
WOW - that is a lot of sweet moola to pay! Hoping breast feeding works out for me - this is a great reminder to stick it out.
How did they feel about taking formula?
Breastfeeding is hard, yes, but is, to me, one of the sweetest, greatest joys of motherhood.
:) You're an awesome mom, Jamie!
Erin, my DH mentioned to me that I hadn't responded to your question yet - my bad! They did great with the formula. Carson had had it a time or two before as had Keira, so I didn't really expect any issues. I'm glad there weren't any, since it would have been a bummer to have to come back early to get them! :D
And add the cost of diapers..Oh man. Kids are expensive :)
